6 Signs It’s Time to Consider a Myomectomy for Fibroids

Women are no strangers to uterine fibroids — the benign growths affect up to 80% of women during their reproductive years. Millions of lucky women aren’t even aware they have fibroids, but the less fortunate run into serious quality of life issues that range from pelvic pain to pregnancy problems thanks to the growths.

While there are several ways we can tackle problematic uterine fibroids, if preserving your uterus and fertility are your goals, a myomectomy can make very good sense.

In this month’s blog post, Dr. Ulas Bozdogan and our team at Advanced Endometriosis Center review some top reasons our patients opt for a myomectomy.

1. Heavy and painful periods

One of the main reasons women come to us for a myomectomy is to put an end to abnormal bleeding — usually periods that are heavy and painful.

Fibroids are growths that develop in the walls of your uterus. When your uterus contracts during your periods, these growths can magnify already uncomfortable cramping issues.

2. Pelvic pain

Another common problem with symptomatic uterine fibroids is that when they grow large enough — usually four centimeters or larger — they press into neighboring organs and tissues, which can lead to pelvic pain.

As well, many women experience low back pain that can be tied to these growths.

3. Pain during sex

Depending on their size and location, some women encounter dyspareunia — the medical term for painful intercourse — when they have uterine fibroids.

4. More frequent urination

Some large fibroids can press against your bladder, leading to more frequent urination, as well as issues with completely emptying your bladder.

5. Problems with pregnancy

While fibroids aren’t closely associated with infertility, they can make pregnancy more challenging as women with potentially problematic fibroids are more at risk for miscarriage, premature birth, and breech presentation.

6. You want to preserve your fertility

Treating troublesome fibroids has its challenges, especially if your goal is to preserve your fertility. This means treating your fibroids with hormone medications isn’t an option, and a hysterectomy is clearly out of the running.

That leaves one great solution — a myomectomy, where the growths are removed while keeping your uterus intact. Dr. Bozdogan is sought after for myomectomy procedures because of his considerable experience, alongside his use of the most advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robot assistance with the daVinci® system.

Blending technology with Dr. Bozdogan’s extensive knowledge has allowed many of our patients to move forward with family building while leaving the discomfort of fibroids behind.
