6 Ways That Robotic Hysterectomy Improves Surgical Outcomes

You’ve decided that a hysterectomy is the best way to address health and quality-of-life issues, and you’re anxious to get to the other side of the procedure as quickly as possible.

Each year, about 600,000 women in the United States come to this same conclusion and undergo a hysterectomy. Many of these women benefit from the latest surgical techniques, including robot-assisted technology, which was approved by the FDA for gynecologic procedures in 2005.

Here at Advanced Endometriosis Center, Dr. Ulas Bozdogan was an early adopter of the da Vinci® surgical robot system and has since become a leader in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

A great example of this exciting technology in action is our robot-assisted hysterectomy, which offers many benefits that we review below.

1. Less tissue damage

One of the biggest benefits of a robot-assisted hysterectomy is that we only need to make very small incisions to access your uterus and other reproductive organs.

Thanks to a high-definition camera and small robotic arms, all of which we thread through the small incisions, we’re able to perform your hysterectomy without making a large incision across your abdomen.

Even better, we’re often able to go in through your vagina to perform the hysterectomy, which means you’ll have no exterior incisions at all.

2. Less blood loss and reduced risk of infection

Thanks to the tissue-sparing benefit of minimally invasive surgery, women lose less blood during a hysterectomy, and there’s also a smaller risk of postoperative infection.

3. An excellent field of vision

When Dr. Bozdogan performs a robot-assisted hysterectomy, he uses a high-definition camera to visualize the surgical site. The images are transmitted to a monitor that offers him a magnified view of the area, allowing a much clearer and detailed image than is possible with the naked eye.

4. More precision in tighter spaces

Not only does Dr. Bozdogan have a better visual of the surgical site, but he’s also able to maneuver the robotic surgical arms with more accuracy in tighter spaces. This also means there’s less collateral tissue damage.

5. A steadier hand

Another benefit of a robot-assisted hysterectomy is that the robotic arms are steadier than human hands. The da Vinci arms don’t tire and remain steady and precise throughout the entire procedure.

6. A shorter hospital stay

With an open hysterectomy, women used to spend a few days or more in the hospital recovering. Since there’s less tissue damage and lower risks with a robot-assisted hysterectomy, hospital stays are much shorter. Some women can even go home the same day if it’s a simple hysterectomy and everything goes smoothly.

As you can see, a robot-assisted hysterectomy offers some welcome benefits over traditional surgical techniques, which is why we’re pleased to offer this innovative technology at our practice.
